MACLUNKEY! The Han/Greedo scene has an inexplicable change on Disney+ because George Lucas will never stop changing it

Who shot first? Han? Greedo? Who cares. MACLUNKEY!

Disney+ launched this morning, and with it comes a mostly inexplicable change to one of cinema’s most debated scenes — the encounter between Han and Greedo at the Mos Eisley Cantina. For reasons unknown to anyone but George Lucas right now, a super brief but newly inserted clip has Greedo shout what the Internet has decided is “MACLUNKEY!” before taking his failed shot at Han.

The change was first noted by StarWarsVisComp, a wonderful Twitter account that tears apart the countless different editions of Star Wars and highlights their endless (and sometimes quite subtle!) differences.

Before you go and get too mad at Disney for changing things for the sake of changing things: apparently this edit came from George Lucas — the uncontested champion of post-release cinematic change himself — with the new clip purportedly being inserted years ago during a 4K restoration that didn’t see the light of day until now.

Comparison clips have already started hitting YouTube:

And yes, for the curious: the “Maclunkey” line really is in the Disney+ release. If you’ve got Disney+, you can find it at around the 50:52 mark in A New Hope.

So what’s a Maclunkey? No one knows. As Uproxx points out, the rest of the dialog throughout the conversation is captioned. But Maclunkey? That’s left to the viewer’s interpretation.

Until we get further explanation, I like to think that it’s the Rodian/Huttese equivalent of “Eh, screw it.” Found a stain on your shirt ten minutes after getting to work? Maclunkey. Gonna take a cheap shot at the baddest smuggler in the galaxy without bothering to, you know, aim? Maclunkey. Edited a new bit of alien dialogue into your classic film but forgot to come up with a translation before it shipped? Maclunkey!

Researchers show off TouchVR palm and finger haptic feedback device

Current-generation VR controllers are fairly limited in enabling users to “feel” virtual objects; bow strings vibrate with haptic shivers, while guns kick back as they fire bullets. Now researchers at Russia’s Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology are proposing a big step forward called TouchVR — a wearable accessory that applies direct force on the palm and vibrotactile feedback to the fingers, enabling users to feel the weight, texture, softness, and slippage of VR objects.

Each TouchVR wearable looks like the foundation of an Iron Man glove: a circular DeltaTouch 3D force generator centered on the palm, plus vibration motors wired with Velcro pads to the thumb and fingers around it. So equipped, the wearer can feel applied force and sliding motions in the palm, combined with vibrations that run from the palm to the fingertips to simulate object textures. There’s no need to hold another controller, as hands are tracked with a Leap Motion hand sensor and HTC Vive Pro VR system.

The researchers are using several Unity-based VR apps to demonstrate TouchVR’s capabilities, including a virtual spider moving on the wearer’s palm, a bouncing soccer ball, and a pulsing dragon’s egg. Other early demos let users operate a virtual robot with help from tactile feedback, or feel immersed in a Matrix-style 3D collection of streaming lines of code.

Simulating the sensation of touch without forcing users to grasp sword hilt-like controllers has been a goal of VR developers for years, and a variety of different approaches have been proposed. Ultrahaptics sends vibration sensations through the air to your fingers, while haptic armbands and other vibrating wearables have been deployed in at least limited tests. TouchVR’s solution is considerably smaller and simpler than Haptx gloves, though the focus here is seemingly less on the precision of finger input than the tactile sensations of interacting with objects.

Going forward, the researchers have additional ideas for how to expand TouchVR’s functionality, including the addition of a Peltier element to generate thermal feedback, and bringing the interface into medical systems for use in rehabilitation and simulations. It’s unclear when or whether the accessory will become available to consumers, but TouchVR will be shown off at Siggraph Asia in Brisbane, Australia from November 17-20.

Workers sue McDonald's over McSexual Harassment

On Tuesday, McDonald’s Corporation was sued by a group of workers in the state of Michigan who say the global fast-food chain allows pervasive sexual harassment to run rampant at its restaurant locations.

The proposed class action lawsuit was filed in a Michigan state court, and charges McDonald’s with failing to have policies in place to address sexual harassment, failing to train managers to prevent abuse, and punishing workers who report abuse.

The lawsuit claims McDonald’s “creates and permits a toxic work culture from the very top,” and cites the firing just last week of McDonalds CEO Steve Easterbrook, who is reported to have had an improper sexual relationship with a subordinate employee.

Easterbrook has not been accused of sexual harassment, and says he made a mistake.

From Reuters:

McDonald’s said in a statement it is implementing safe-workplace training at its corporate-owned restaurants, and encouraging franchisees to do the same.

“There is a deeply important conversation around safe and respectful workplaces in communities throughout the U.S. and around the world,” McDonald’s said, echoing comments made in August by its new chief executive, Chris Kempczinski.

Roughly 95% of McDonald’s U.S. restaurants are franchised, and the plaintiffs’ lawyers said the Chicago-based company does not push hard enough to improve training at the franchised restaurants.

Supercar maker Vector has the world's best website

Vector made bizarre high-performance supercars that still command six-figure price tags decades after manufacture. Check out its amazing website. Note:

1. The wonder. The design. The impeccable taste.
2. The whole website is a single unclickable image, including the menu buttons. I just uploaded Vector's whole actual website as this post's "Featured Image."

In other words, Vector's website is exactly what it should be: a technically impractical concept design that looks cool but turns out to be an incomplete prototype.

Check out the Vector V8's dashboard/cockpit, replete with amber electroluminescent display.

Xbox One Is Getting A Shuffle Button To Let You Go Through Your Backlog At Random

A new “Surprise Me” button will be added to the Xbox One’s game library, Microsoft announced yesterday on Twitter. Rolling out first for players in the Xbox One insider testing program, the “Surprise Me” button will allow the indecisive player to select a game randomly from their library to play.

The button doesn’t automatically launch the game, according to testers, so you still have the option of going back and taking another spin or 10 of the roulette wheel until you find the game in your backlog that you didn’t know you wanted to play. Even if you just end up going back to Gears 5 or some other game you’ve played for hundreds of hours already, it can at least be a fun little game of “let’s remember some video games.”

It’ll also be a nice addition for anyone who’s ever recently finished a big game and can’t decide what they’re actually in the mood for. This happens to me often. Should I go back to chipping away at that sprawling role-playing game? Maybe I should take it easy and just grind through the battle pass in my favorite shooter. Or is it finally time for me to dig through that ever-growing back catalog of games which, thanks to the Xbox One’s backwards compatibility, now includes stuff like 2004’s Alien Hominid by the makers of Castle Crashers. Actually:

Xbox Game Pass already has similar shuffle button that randomly selects one of the hundred plus games in its catalog, so it makes sense to expand that to the rest of the player’s game library. Between months of downloadable Games with Gold and the fact that the Xbox One has been out for six years now, there are dozens of games in my library I’ve forgotten about.

This type of shuffle feature has long been common for navigating unwieldy mp3 libraries and streaming playlists. With gaming undergoing many of the same changes thanks to digital and streaming technology, the only surprising thing is that it’s taken so long for a major console maker to adopt something similar.
